Sustainability at ISPPD-14

Sustainability at ISPPD-14

ISPPD is committed to supporting sustainability across all aspects of our Meeting.

This year, we are pleased to partner with Bella Center Copenhagen, a venue recognised for its Responsible Hospitality strategy. Since 2016, Bella Center has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, cutting energy use by more than 40% through efficiency measures and renewable energy. Today, approximately 30% of the venue’s energy is generated by its roof-integrated solar panel park. After the event, Bella Center will also produce an Event Climate Report, analysing emissions from energy and water use, waste, purchased goods, and food and beverage consumption.

Copenhagen further enhances our sustainability goals through its excellent public transportation system and pedestrian- and bike-friendly infrastructure. The venue is easily accessible from both the airport and city centre via metro, trains, or buses, helping lower reliance on taxis or shuttles and reducing CO₂ emissions. The city’s extensive cycling network further helps reduce reliance on taxis and lowers the event’s overall carbon footprint whilst offering a practical, sustainable and healthy way to move around the city.

In line with our venue, we at ISPPD-14 aim to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout our value chain. Below you can find the SDGs we want to support and work towards, and how you can help us.

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

We are introducing several dedicated ISPPD initiatives, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle, while enjoying being together with the community.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • Option for meatless/vegetarian meals, or options for 1 or 2 no-meat lunches. We aim to offer vegetarian, vegan, fish, and gluten-free options, and to provide more healthy options during coffee breaks.
  • Reintroducing the “Sputum Cup” event as an opportunity for delegates to get active, whilst having fun and unwinding from a busy day of science.
  • Promote walking to the venue and around the city.
  • Encourage train travel as an alternative to flying.

Copenhagen’s extensive bike-friendly infrastructure also promotes active and healthy mobility. The city has widespread cycling paths, and in some cases, delegates can access discounted bike rentals during their stay.

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Our top priority is to make high-quality education available to our community. Our goals include eliminating educational gaps between genders and geographic communities; providing more accessible conference options; and enhancing the quality of the scientific programme.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • Special Sessions for early career professionals to meet and interact with seasoned professionals – “Meet The Expert” Sessions
  • ISPPD Travel Grants: The Travel Grant programme aims to support talented early-career researchers and young investigators from diverse geographical and scientific areas who wish to participate in the ISPPD meetings, by aiding with registration fees, transportation & accommodation.
  • Presentations of basic, clinical and translational research findings, encouraging audience participation and collaboration.
  • Young Investigator Awards supporting the research contributions of outstanding early-career researchers and the Robert Austrian Research Award, recognising groundbreaking contributions to the field of pneumonia and pneumococcal diseases.
  • Special keynote presentations delivered by a large number of internationally renowned experts covering a large spectrum of our multidisciplinary field.

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

We ensure inclusiveness and equality for committee members, presenters, and invited speakers.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • Aim for and monitor gender equality and equal access among our delegates, presenters, and committee members.
  • Make our meeting a welcoming, inclusive space for people of all ages, genders, and abilities.
  • Maintain an environment that is free from discrimination and where attendees are treated fairly and with respect, making sure that everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives.
  • Do the utmost to increase and invite more diverse speakers, performers, and attendees and create a more inclusive environment. As well as include more females in leadership positions within the ISPPD.

Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable

We recognise the important role that cities play in shaping sustainable, inclusive, and resilient societies, and that large international meetings like ISPPD can influence urban systems through how they are planned and delivered. For the ISPPD 2026 Meeting (ISPPD-14), we are committed to supporting sustainable urban development by prioritising accessible venues, sustainable mobility, and strong engagement with local communities and suppliers.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • We support sustainable urban mobility by hosting the meeting at a venue with excellent public transportation access and by encouraging train travel over flying.
  • We promote inclusive and accessible urban spaces by ensuring disabled facilities are available in and around the venue.
  • We strengthen local urban economies by working with local suppliers and caterers.
  • We support sustainable urban food systems by serving locally sourced, seasonal, and sustainably produced food.
  • We reduce the environmental footprint of urban events by minimising food waste and providing food donation options.
  • We contribute to responsible urban resource management by providing recycling options throughout the venue.

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

We recognise the environmental impact that large-scale events like the ISPPD Meetings can have, so sustainable production and consumption are one of our top priorities in organising the ISPPD 2026 Meeting (ISPPD-14). We are working with our suppliers to ensure maximum positive change.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • The ISPPD-14 Meeting venue emphasises responsible resource management, including waste reduction, efficient use of energy and water, and sustainable practices integrated throughout its operations.
  • We are limiting printed promotional materials in favour of digital alternatives.
  • We encourage all of our exhibitors to participate in this initiative by reducing single-use giveaways at their booths.
  • Close cooperation with exhibitors is essential, which is why the venue has developed a set of waste prevention guidelines for exhibitors (and their stand builders) offering recommendations on how to avoid waste at trade fairs and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • We work with local catering partners to ensure the use of local and seasonal products to reduce the transportation footprint of the Meeting.

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

We recognise the urgent need to take action on climate change and to reduce the environmental impact of large international events. For the ISPPD 2026 Meeting (ISPPD-14), we are committed to supporting climate action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable travel, and raising awareness of climate responsibility through our planning, partnerships, and communications.

What we are doing at ISPPD-14 in 2026:

  • We reduce the Meeting’s carbon footprint by hosting it at the Bella Center Copenhagen, which follows a Responsible Hospitality strategy.
  • We support low-carbon mobility by selecting a venue with excellent access to public transportation.
  • We encourage climate-friendly travel choices by promoting train travel as an alternative to flying.
  • We reduce emissions associated with food systems by working with local suppliers and caterers.
  • We raise awareness and promote climate responsibility by communicating the Meeting’s sustainability objectives through our website, app, and communication channels.

Contributions you can make as an ISPPD-14 Meeting Delegate:

As individuals and as a community, we can and should contribute to protecting the earth and its natural systems and resources, and to sustaining the natural ecological balance of our ecosystem. Here is what we encourage you to do during the ISPPD-14 Meeting in Copenhagen:

  • Use the mobile app, the virtual platform and the official ISPPD-14 Meeting website (instead of printing) to inquire about the programme details.
  • Choose walking, cycling or public transportation to get around Copenhagen.
  • Sort your waste in appropriate bins at venues, hotels, and around the city.
  • Opt for reusable mugs and bottles and refuse single-use plastic. Water from water coolers is of good drinking quality, and we will make sure there are enough around the venue, so don´t forget to bring your bottle!
  • Do not print booking confirmations and boarding passes; instead, provide digital copies.
  • Provide an alternative to business cards – QR code to social accounts or e-card.
  • Opt for a vegetarian meal option when available and possible.
