Young Investigator Award

The ISPPD-14 Meeting provides abstract presenters with an opportunity to apply for the Young Investigator Award (YIA) via the abstract submission system.

 

KEY DATES

  • Application: Via the abstract submission portal
  • Deadline: 24 November 2025 (23:59 CET)
  • Notification date: Finalists are notified a week before the Meeting

GOAL

ISPPD will grant abstract awards to young investigators presenting their abstracts during the ISPPD-14 Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. The goal of this award is to inspire young investigators to continue research on pneumonia and pneumococcal diseases by recognizing outstanding scientific investigations.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Currently in or within 5 years of completing a training programme
  • Must be the presenting author on an abstract accepted for the ISPPD-14 Meeting
  • Must be a registered ISPPD-14 attendee

 

PROCEDURE

  • Eligible persons submitting abstracts to ISPPD-14 will note at the time of submission if they would like to be considered for the award. Please note: When applying for the YIA, it is recommended that the presenting author is also the abstract submitter. The designated presenting author is the one who should submit the required documentation for the YIA application. 
  • Reviewers for each abstract topic will list their recommendations for the top 3 abstracts from among those submitted for award consideration.
  • A panel of judges will receive the recommended abstracts before the ISPPD-14 Meeting and select 12 finalists.
  • During ISPPD-14, the judges will review the presentations or posters of the finalists and select 4 winners.
  • The winners will be announced during the Closing Ceremony, so we advise all 12 finalists to be present.

Abstracts will be considered in 4 categories

  1. Clinical and epidemiological studies – LMIC setting
  2. Clinical and epidemiological studies – High-income setting
  3. Basic or translational science and microbiology – LMIC setting
  4. Basic or translational science and microbiology – High-income setting

 

For each category, 3 finalists will be selected among registered abstract presenters with successful YIA applications (12 in total). Country income categories are as defined by the World Bank. The 4 winners (1 per category) will be announced at the Closing Ceremony of ISPPD-14.

 

REVIEW

Scoring criteria

  • Novel content and potential contribution to scientific advancement
  • Clear description and presentation of methods and findings
  • Potential for significant public health impact

Judges

The panel of judges will include 5 persons:

  • Panel leader from the host country
  • Two basic/translational scientists or microbiologists – one from a low- and or middle-income setting, and one from a high-income setting
  • Two clinical or epidemiology experts from – one from a low- and or middle-income setting, and one from a high-income setting

 

AWARD

Finalists will be acknowledged with a ribbon that will be displayed on their ISPPD-14 posters or will be included on the title slide of their presentations. Winners will be announced during the Closing Ceremony. Winners will receive a certificate and free registration for the next ISPPD Meeting (ISPPD-15 in 2028).
